The deadline for installing Smart Meters in all homes across the UK has now been extended up to 30 June 2025. But there is no legal obligation to have one.

What exactly is a smart meter?  And why do you need one?

The most important thing to know about smart meters is that ultimately they will save energy, reduce emissions and in most cases cut down on the money we all spend on our energy bills.  Using similar technology to mobile phone signals, the smart meter will transmit energy usage information to your energy provider and also to an in-home display, which will be installed at the same time as the smart meter and will allow you to monitor your usage in real time, in pounds and pence.  This will allow suppliers to understand your energy usage better and in turn charge you correctly rather than estimate your usage and your bill.  This will allow you to take control of your financial management for energy.
